We still alive

Today 21.12.2012 was predicted by the Mayans as the end of the world. It's now exactly 00:04 on the 22.12.2012 and we all still here.

To me the question was never "is the world going to end?"... Instead I ask myself "am I ready for the end?".

Dad's first Trail Run

As I was busy getting into shape - once again, I saw a Trail Run @ Van De Kemps Kloof coming up.

So being the experienced road runner I am, I decided to take on the challenge - how much different can a Trail Run be to Road Running I thought, and seeing that I only stay 2.5km from Van De Kemps Kloof, and I can causally do 10km-15km road run, I decided to just run to the race, do the 6km Trail Run and run back home... as easy as can be right... wrong!!

So I woke up @ 06:00, got done for the race and out the door I was, a nice 2.5km road run warm up to Van De Kemps Kloof and there I was, early enough to fill in my race form and scope out the surroundings. Filling in the entry form was very similar to the Road Race form, except for the terms and conditions, how you ask, well it said stuff like:

  • Participants must please note that Trail Races can be potentially hazardous/dangerous
  • There may be wild animals and limited access for immediate medical assistance
  • Due to the heat, snakes could be encountered on the route, therefore be alert
  • As a participant I understand that there is a risk of sustaining bodily injury and even death
After reading this, I thought to myself - maybe I should just jog back home, instead I went and found a nice quite place and started to pray - no jokes. In the distance I can hear the race marshal herding up the masses, so off to the start I head.

First off goes the 16km runners, followed by my 6km group of +-35 runners. And we off, know I could end here and say how nice the race was and how easy it was, but I would be lying. The first 1km was a big adjustment to me as I had to run on rock's, skip over streams of water and make constant choices as to where to place my foot next. After the 1km mark I decided to pickup the pace and off I was, eventually catching up to some of the 16km runners, only to realize the intense incline/hill that lies ahead. After walking my way to the top, it was downhill again, so away I go.

The next 3km was just me and the beautiful Van De Kemps Kloof, without another runner in sight. It was one of the best running experiences I ever had, the occasional butterfly or lizard tagging along now and then followed by the sound of chirping birds. As I found myself drawn into the nature around me I suddenly realized it been quite sometime since I last saw another runner and started wondering if I was on the right trail. This is where my trekking ability come in handy, looking at the path ahead for footprints left by other runners ahead of me until I eventually came to a stream wide enough to swim across. At this stage I was convinced I was lost and started thinking of the search and rescue team that will eventually come looking for me only to see a race Marshall standing on the other side of the stream hidden behind some bushes telling me to run through the stream. Through the stream I go with only 1km left and soaking wet shoes and socks

The last 1km made me realize that I was made for Trail running and that lizards and butterflies make good running partners - i'm hooked!!

Michaela's last day of school

Today was Michaela’s last day of her first year of school.

The year began with Michaela crying every day for 3months and me leaving there not wanting to go to work/not wanting to engage with others, constantly thinking of my little girls outstretched arm  and a face saying “take me with daddy” – I am so sorry for those first few months Michaela. After attending a parents meeting one night and hearing from the other parent’s how I can improve the crying situation by letting her carry her own bag into the school, etc – things started getting much better, so much better that 6months down the line and it was me with the outstretched arm and a face saying “hug me bye”.

One of the lowest points for me as a parent was the day they invited all the parent’s to participate in the Kinder Musiek activity. Me and Luceen arrived at the school only to find out we had the time wrong and the activity was already done – all the other kids parents were there on time and only Michaela’s parents were missing. I felt so bad for not being there with/for her that day – sorry Michaela. The next day as I was picking her up she said to me, “dad why you fetching me so late?” – I have been making up ever since J

The highlight of the year for me was when she showed me her report with Gold Stars all through it. Our little girl has learnt so much in her first year @ Smiley Kids.

Dad and Mom are proud of you Michaela.

Michaela's own baby - Kaitlin

Michaela and her sister - Micah

Michaela reacted very surprised when she met her little sister for the first time, there was this look of "what's going on here?"... and she was very concerned about the needle in mommies arm.

She still called the baby brother/sister the first few times.

The sky outside

The sky outside was beaming with sunrays the day Micah was born... if i remember correctly it was pouring down with Michaela.

Welcome Micah

You were born @ 06:29 this morning.
Weight : 3.76
Height : 52.5cm

Dad was hoping for a boy this time... But now dad has three girls to look after him. Btw, you were really hungry when you came out and latched first time... Mom and Dad was reading Psalm 139 before the Caesar, speaks about "you watched me grow from conception to birth".

Dad and Dr Ferreira

Me and Dr Ferreira after the Caesar. What a cool/funny doctor he is, he also delivered Michaela two and a half years ago.

They call him Mr Bean I believe... he definitely adds humor to any situation - we almost laughed the entire caesar through.

Dad cuts the umbilical chord

Arriving at the hospital

Never been the first people to arrive at a hospital... No queues, no searching for parking :) Luckily all the staff were wide awake and very help-full.

On our way to hospital

Had to be up at 3 this morning, hospital checkin @ 4:30. Doctor will be doing Caesar @ 6.

Brother/Sister is coming...

Because we never find out what sex you will be, when the doctor asked Michaela what your name is gonna be, she said "Brother/Sister" :) - the doctor had a good laugh. We are actually thinking of giving your name Micah (pronounced differently if boy or girl). The doctor recons you should be here by the 15 Aug 2012.
